Some guidelines for safe chatting on IRC.

IRC chatters generally use a nickname, until you are more familiar with IRC we recommend that you do not tell people your real name, location, address, or Email address.  Although you will be quite safe in #Tao, just as in real life there will be people who are not completely honest on IRC, so its best to give out information on a 'need to know' basis, in other words if they dont need to know dont tell them. And there are very few circumstances when they actually need to know anything about you.

Just explain that for the sake of privacy and security your policy is to use a nickname and not divulge your real name and details. Nicknames and anonymity are there for a reason so you might as well use them.

It would be extremely unwise to tell anyone your credit card details or bank account number, etc.

Be very careful if you accept files from other people via dcc or any other method, especially .exe files, these can contain trojans which might be used to infiltrate your computer. Make sure everything you get is from a trusted and reputable source, if in doubt then dont accept the files. It is wise to regularly scan for viruses or use some kind of  firewall,  nukenabber, or other form of protection against trojans and DoS attacks.  For more information on security and protection click here.
